Bin Laden Killed

Today's weather: High = 21 Low = 10
Sunny

I'm sure many of you know this already, so there's no point in repeating what the newspapers already say. The ironic timing of this whole thing was that I didn't actually get the information until going to Hong Kong for a holiday trip, and then finding out online about a US military operation that killed Osama Bin Laden.

The first reaction was that this was some sort of May Fools joke, and a hoax. Even now I still have many questions and doubts as to whether Bin Laden really was killed, and I could only imagine how the conspiracy theories are spinning wild on this one.

The markets are also reacting to this news, with oil prices having gone down slightly.

Another piece of irony is that former president George Bush devoted much of his career to the capture or killing of Bin Laden, which didn't happen when he was in power. Then along comes a liberal Democrat who does the job within a few years. No doubt, this will be amazing news for Barack Obama's political career and ratings, because he happened to be the president when they killed Osama. I can also see the late-night talk show hosts going nuts on making all the jokes about Obama and Osama as they have the same sounding name.

Actually, I really don't think that whether Bush or Obama was in power had much to do with the fact that Bin Laden was killed. Given a determined and skilled military operation, they were going to get the job done eventually. It just took the better part of 10 years! Even so, this is awesome news in the ongoing war on terrorism. Probably not the best time for celebrating just yet, as some people are doing. The most logical thing for Homeland Security to do right about now would be to raise the alert levels in case of a retaliatory attack.

Even so, with Bin Laden out of the piture now, they should focus everything they've got now on destroying what remainds of al-qaeda
